Saxophonist John Paulson returns to his native Rochester for a program of jazz featuring his own compositions and standard tunes. After 35 years of full-time teaching, Dr. Paulson now has professor emeritus status at Saint Mary’s University in Winona. Following his retirement from Saint Mary’s University he taught jazz studies part time at Winona State University for five years. He has performed internationally with student jazz groups and done freelance work with The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Mel Torme, Andy Williams, Bob Hope, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Pioneer Memorial Theatre and The Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City. RCMS is pleased to celebrate Dr. Paulson's 70th year with this concert honoring his artistry and tireless musical contributions.

J0hn Paulson
John Paulson, saxophone, started his musical journey in Rochester playing in area rock bands and participating in school music groups. He migrated west and earned his B.M and M.M from the University of Utah, where he studied jazz arranging with Henry Wolking, and completed his DMA in music education from the University of Washington. He started playing the saxophone at age 10, studied flute and clarinet with members of the Utah Symphony and the L.A. Chamber Orchestra, and studied jazz improvisation with Garry Dial in New York. After 35 years of full-time teaching, Dr. Paulson now has professor emeritus status at Saint Mary’s University in Winona. After retiring from Saint Mary’s, he taught jazz studies part time at Winona State University for five years. He has performed internationally with student jazz groups and done freelance work with The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Mel Torme, Andy Williams, Bob Hope, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Pioneer Memorial Theatre and The Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City. He has produced six commercial jazz CDs and created five master class CDs for the Saxophone Journal. The second John Paulson Big Band CD, Five Years On, was released in the fall of 2018. Dr. Paulson has received numerous grants from Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and the Minnesota State Arts board for his projects; his latest endeavor is teaching at the Minnesota Conservatory for the Arts in Winona. He’s a member of ASCAP, JEN (the Jazz Educators Network), River Arts Alliance and is now an official artist endorser of Jody Jazz Sax Mouthpieces and accessories.

Cliff Jack
Cliff Jack began playing jazz guitar as a teenager. He performs jazz standards with bassist Bob Gardner monthly at the Redwood Room. He is also a professor of radiology and the Alexander Family Professor of Alzheimer’s Disease Research at the Mayo Clinic. His research group is focused on brain imaging in cognitive aging and dementia.

Larry Price
Larry Price, piano, is originally from Florida. He began his musical career playing Dixieland jazz on the clarinet. He later switched to piano and studied jazz at the University of Miami. After moving to Germany, he studied at the conservatory of music in Luxembourg, won the jazz performance prize for piano at the Trier Jazz symposium three times, and studied privately with John Taylor and Michael Herr. Since returning to the United States Larry has performed with Steve Houghton, Eric Schneider, Bobby Lewis and Steve Yeager. Mr. Price has composed and arranged several pieces for the Winona State University faculty jazz ensemble, for which he is the pianist, and has also done several recordings with area musicians. Larry now teaches full time at St. Mary's University, teaches jazz studies at Winona State University, and plays gigs regularly in the area.

Miles Johnston
After starting on the drums at the age of 10 and playing through his early school years, Miles Johnston joined the Army as a musician. He attended the Armed Forces School of Music in Norfolk, VA and served in the 7th Infantry Div. Band at Fort Ord, CA and the 3rd Armored Div. Band in Frankfurt, Germany. After his military service Miles studied music at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Since then, Miles has played steadily with numerous bands and musicians, including a one-year stint on the S. S. Norway with a jazz trio for the Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Robert S.P. Gardener
Robert S.P. Gardner has studied music theory, composition, and bass playing at Augsburg College, jazz arranging at Indiana University, and band arranging and bass pedagogy at Northwestern University. Further studies include composition and arranging with Frederic Douglas Norman, staff arranger for Mercury Records and the NBC Orchestra, and Danny Holgate of the Manhattan School of Music. He holds an M.A. in Fine Arts/Integrated Arts Education from University of Montana’s Creative Pulse program, and an M.A. in Religious Studies, Philosophy and Literature from Indiana University. In 2010 Mr. Gardner was chosen as an inaugural member of the Composer Teaching Artist Training Program with the American Composers Forum. Since arriving in Rochester in 1991, he has been active as a full-time educator as well as a freelance bassist, composer, and arranger. His works have been performed locally by Rochester Chamber Music Society, Choral Arts Ensemble, Children’s Dance Theatre, SEMYO, Sonata Singers, and St. Paul City Ballet. Mr. Gardner currently serves as Chair of Fine Arts at Rochester Lourdes High School.
