The C-O-X Trio is comprised of Rochester musicians violinist Kathleen Covalt, cellist John Osborn, and pianist Tianyao Xie.  In their debut recital with RCMS, the trio will present an attractive program consisting of works by Haydn, Schubert, and Smetana.

 ​Kathleen Covalt began violin lessons at age six and has performed publicly since she was eight. Kathleen has played with the San Francisco Academy Orchestra, Mendocino Festival Orchestra, Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra, Texas Music Festival Orchestra, the Kennedy Center Music Institute Orchestra and the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. In 2012 Kathleen performed as a soloist with the St. Croix Valley Symphony Orchestra.

She has played chamber music at venues across the United States and in Europe including performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, La Madeleine (Paris), the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, the Fisk Mansion (San Francisco), and the Mendocino Music Festival. 

Kathleen was a recipient of the 2021/2022 Individual Established Artist Grant through the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council for her concert series, Women’s Voices Through Music, which featured music by women composers. In 2016-2017, as a member of the Kalliope Duo, Kathleen received another SEMAC grant, and she was part of the Minnesota Public Radio Class Notes program for Rochester during 2013-2014 as the violinist of the Odelia Piano Trio. 

An enthusiastic educator, Kathleen Covalt has taught students age three to adult in private and group settings since 2000. She has taught in public and private schools in San Francisco, Red Wing, River Falls, and Rochester. She is the owner of KML Violin & Viola Studio in Rochester where she shares her passion of music with the next generation. 

Kathleen Covalt holds a bachelor of music in violin performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied violin with Ian Swensen and chamber music with Mark Sokol and Yoshikazu Nagai. Other mentors include Ray Shows and Nancy Oliveros of the Artaria String Quartet, Renee-Paule Gauthier and Lynn Kuo.

John Osborne

Tianyao Xie

Dr. Tianyao Xie is a pianist with D.M.A and M.M degrees in piano performance from
Boston University where she studied under Pavel Nersessian and Boaz Sharon. She was
assistant faculty at Boston University Tanglewood Institute 2016 and currently works as
a concert pianist and a private piano teacher. She also served as the vice president of
Minnesota Music Teachers Association State Convention and the vice president of
Rochester Area Keyboard Club.

As an active concert pianist, she works internationally with a variety of orchestras,
musicians and composers. In 2020 she received the Advancing Artist Grant - Piano
Recital “Scenes from Childhood,” and then in 2023 was awarded the Advancing Artist
Grant for the “Tracing to the Origins - Piano meets Traditional Chinese Instruments
Concert Series”. Recently, she has appeared with the Austin Symphony Orchestra
(performing the Petrushka), Rochester New Music Ensemble, A Festival Of Music
concert series, and a series of piano solo concerts and piano trios and violin/piano duo
concerts in Rochester.

As a music festival and event organizer, she has been the guest artist and artistic
consultant for the Northwest American Youth International Competition since 2023, and
she organized the first Southeast MN Federation Scholarship Competition in 2024. She
has served as the coordinator assistant for the International e-Piano Junior Competition
and International e-Piano MusikFest since 2017. She also served as an instructor and
interpreter in the 7th , 8th and 10th Beijing International Music Festival and Academy and as
a program manager and interpreter in the 5th International Piano Art Festival.
