The C-O-X Trio is comprised of Rochester musicians violinist Kathleen Covalt, cellist John Osborn, and pianist Tianyao Xie.  In their debut recital with RCMS, the trio will present an attractive program consisting of works by Haydn, Schubert, and Smetana. 

Kathleen Covalt

Picture
Kathleen Covalt, violin, is a passionate chamber musician and has performed in venues across
the United States and in Europe. She is a recipient of several individual artist grants from the
Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and has been featured as a Minnesota Public Radio Class
Notes Artist for Rochester. Kathleen played as a first violinist with the Rochester Symphony
Orchestra for a decade. She is a member of the C-O-X Trio and a professional freelance musician
who specializes in chamber music collaborations on both violin and viola. Kathleen holds a
degree in Violin Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is the owner
and teacher of KML Violin Studio in Rochester, where she shares her love of music with the next
generation.

John Osborn

John Osborn has been a cellist in the Rochester Symphony for more than 20 years, and served
as Interim Principal during the 2021-22 season and Assistant Principal since the 2022-2023
season. He started on the cello in the 4th grade, and studied privately in the studio of Kristi
Knecht. He is a founding member of the Campion String Quartet, and enjoys the close
collaboration of chamber music.

Tianyao Xie

Dr. Tianyao Xie is a pianist with D.M.A and M.M degrees in piano performance from
Boston University where she studied under Pavel Nersessian and Boaz Sharon. She was
assistant faculty at Boston University Tanglewood Institute 2016 and currently works as
a concert pianist and a private piano teacher. She also served as the vice president of
Minnesota Music Teachers Association State Convention and the vice president of
Rochester Area Keyboard Club.

As an active concert pianist, she works internationally with a variety of orchestras,
musicians and composers. In 2020 she received the Advancing Artist Grant - Piano
Recital “Scenes from Childhood,” and then in 2023 was awarded the Advancing Artist
Grant for the “Tracing to the Origins - Piano meets Traditional Chinese Instruments
Concert Series”. Recently, she has appeared with the Austin Symphony Orchestra
(performing the Petrushka), Rochester New Music Ensemble, A Festival Of Music
concert series, and a series of piano solo concerts and piano trios and violin/piano duo
concerts in Rochester.

As a music festival and event organizer, she has been the guest artist and artistic
consultant for the Northwest American Youth International Competition since 2023, and
she organized the first Southeast MN Federation Scholarship Competition in 2024. She
has served as the coordinator assistant for the International e-Piano Junior Competition
and International e-Piano MusikFest since 2017. She also served as an instructor and
interpreter in the 7th , 8th and 10th Beijing International Music Festival and Academy and as
a program manager and interpreter in the 5th International Piano Art Festival.
