We look forward with great anticipation to an exciting concert season as RCMS celebrates its 10th year! I am joined by our executive director, Joan Smith, and the members of the board of directors in thanking you, our audience and contributors, for the support and appreciation RCMS has received over the past years. Because of your generous donations, RCMS is able to bring great performances of chamber music to the community at the lovely and conveniently located Christ United Methodist Church--at no admission charge! In our efforts to strengthen our commitment to bring more live performances, and as a way of thanking you, we have increased the number of our season concerts to six this year!
Argentinian composer Carlos Guastavino, born 100 years ago this year, will be a featured composer in our first concert on September 29. David Townsend and yours truly will perform Guastavino's sonata and two other works for clarinet and piano. We will continue to savor more Argentinian music in the same program with two dances by the tango chief himself, Astor Piazolla, as arranged for piano trio with clarinet. For these works, David and I will be joined by cellist Hong Wang. Then, Hong Wang returns for our second concert on December 1 with pianist Juan Li to present a demanding and fantastic program of cello/piano duos by Franck, Poulenc and Chopin. The year 2013 will bring in a wonderful performance by Rochester's young artists on January 12. You will not want to miss our very own award-winning high school students--violinist Jennifer Kim, pianist Marisa Lin, trombonist Isaac Johnson and the Bella Voce Singers as they present a refreshing variety of instrumental and vocal music. Our fourth concert, February 16, will be the Rochester debut of the Chiarina Piano Quartet playing music by Schubert, Faure and contemporary American composer Lee Hoiby. With members based in Minnesota and Ohio, the (omit one the) quartet will no doubt make many fans in Rochester. Our next concert, scheduled for March 23, will feature our own Robert S. P. Gardner bringing together some local singers and instrumentalists for an unusual and upbeat program well suited for lovers of coffee and jazz. In the program is Bach's Coffee Cantata, essentially a miniature comic opera, and Claude Bolling's Toot Suite featuring master trumpeter Ashley Hall. Then for the sixth and final concert of the season, Rochester will once again witness the virtuosity of Véronique Mathieu. Returning to Rochester for the second time, this sensational Canadian violinist will dazzle you with her performance of the wild Tzigane by Ravel, the celebrated Sonata No. 2 by Prokofiev and the recently discovered Sonata in F by Mendelssohn.
Come and join us for some evenings of wonderful chamber music and camaraderie. Take a little time off from your busy schedules and be inspired and refreshed. Our receptions during intermissions are also free!
See you at the concerts!
